Leave it to Arizona’s top Sheriff Joe Arpaio to attract a crowd at a conservative luncheon held in San Diego yesterday.
Not one to shy away from his critics, Sheriff Joe was more than happy to say a few words to the 100 anti-Arpaio protesters from a north county group called Escondido Human Rights Committee.
Before Sheriff Joe gave his speech he took the time to address the protesters in front of the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo. The protesters were waving "Stop the hate,” "Down with Arpaio," and "Why do you hate Mexicans?" signs.
When Arpaio, who was protected by law enforcement, tried to talk to his adversaries chants of "Racist go home" drowned out his words. But in true Sheriff Joe fashion he smiled at the protesters and went inside the country club to address the folks who invited him to San Diego in the first place.
The Sheriff is a staunch supporter of Arizona’s tough illegal immigration bill SB1070. While some of the provisions were set aside by the federal judge, the end of sanctuary cities in the state remained in tact causing plenty of concern for open-border activists.
“A lot of (illegal) immigrants are heading to California that we arrest, and I would hope that your governor would at least send me a little note saying thank you for grabbing these guys," Arpaio said during a speech before a conservative organization.
It's the kind of heated reactions he gets all over the country, he told the audience.
"It's crazy. They're all telling me to go home. I have a right to be in San Diego. If you want to see my papers, I'll show them to all of you," Arpaio said while joking.
The event was sponsored by North County chapter of Conservative Order for Good Government, and there wasn’t a seat to be had as the luncheon was completely sold-out.
In the past Sheriff Arpaio has garnered national attention for his illegal immigration sweeps and requiring his prisoners in jail wear pink underwear. Even NBA basketball great, Charles Barkley made an appearance in an Arpaio’s jail due to an intoxication charge in Arizona. He was given the infamous “pink underwear,” but the Sheriff didn’t make Barkley wear the shocking pink under garments.
There were also a handful of Sheriff Joe supporters that attended the rally at the country club. "Joe Arpaio is my hero. I wish there were a million more like him," said Dom who didn’t want to use his last name.
The San Diego Police Department said there were no arrests and the demonstration went off without a hitch.
